Mercury Racing Propellers: What Makes Them Different?

A Mercury Racing propeller isn't simply a standard Mercury prop with a different logo.

Mercury Racing develops specific propeller families for performance applications, with changes to blade geometry, barrel length, diameter, pitch availability and finishing depending on what the prop is intended to accomplish.

That includes well-known names such as the Mercury Racing Bravo I FS, Bravo I XS, Bravo I XC, MAX5, MAX5 ST and Revolution 4 XP. Mercury Racing currently offers numerous propeller families for everything from bass and bay boats to high-performance center consoles, catamarans and sterndrives.

Pro Finish vs. Lab Finish

One important Mercury Racing term is finish.

Mercury Racing offers performance propellers in Pro Finish and Lab Finish configurations.

Pro Finish props are hand-finished and balanced for performance applications. Examples include the Bravo I FS, Bravo I LT, Bravo I XS, Bravo I XC and Revolution 4 XP. 

Lab Finish goes further with additional blade thinning and sharpening to reduce drag and allow the propeller to turn more RPM. Mercury Racing primarily targets Lab Finish props toward lighter, higher-speed performance applications. 

That difference matters when replacing a prop. Two props carrying the Bravo I name aren't necessarily the same design just because diameter and pitch look similar.

Mercury Racing Bravo I Propellers

The Bravo I name actually covers several specialized designs.

For example, the Bravo I FS is a four-blade, 15.25-inch-diameter Pro Finish prop designed for four-stroke outboards and sterndrives. Mercury Racing uses a shortened exhaust barrel and its Performance Vent System (PVS) to tune planing characteristics. 

The Bravo I XC, meanwhile, is specifically designed around single-outboard bass and flats applications. It uses blade cupping and generous blade area to maintain grip at elevated engine heights. 

There are also Bravo I XS, LT, OC and Lab Finish variants.

So if someone tells us they need a "Bravo I prop," the next question should be which Bravo I.

Mercury Racing MAX5 and MAX5 ST

The Mercury Racing MAX5 is a five-blade stainless-steel performance propeller designed for high engine heights and high-speed applications.

Mercury Racing currently lists the MAX5 for applications including performance center consoles, bass boats, catamarans and sport V-bottoms, with half-inch pitch increments available to more precisely dial in engine operating RPM. 

The MAX5 ST is not simply another pitch range. Mercury Racing developed its shortened exhaust barrel specifically around applications including the 4.6L V8 Mercury Racing 300R with a Sport Master gearcase. 

That's why choosing a performance propeller by blade count alone doesn't work.

Mercury Racing Revolution 4 XP

The Revolution 4 XP is another four-blade performance prop, but its design targets different handling characteristics.

Mercury Racing uses a standard-length exhaust tube and significant tip cup to generate stern lift, improve planing and provide strong handling through turns and rough water. It's aimed particularly at multi-engine stepped-bottom center consoles and certain single-engine bay boats. 

That makes the Revolution 4 XP a useful example of how barrel design and blade geometry can change how a boat carries itself, even when comparing stainless-steel four-blade propellers.

Choosing a Mercury Racing Propeller

Pitch and diameter still matter, but they're only part of the decision.

When narrowing down a Mercury Racing propeller, consider:

• Engine and horsepower
• Gearcase
• Gear ratio
• Current propeller and pitch
• Wide-open-throttle RPM
• Engine mounting height
• Boat hull and weight
• Single vs. multiple engines
• Current performance problem or goal

Are you trying to improve hole shot? Carry a heavy center console? Gain stern lift? Reduce prop slip at elevated engine heights? Improve top-end performance?

Those answers can point toward very different propeller families.
